Die Schritte Nemesis

The International Laboratory Ensemble under the aegis of its director and founder, Yuri Birte Anderson, has performed two iterations of Die Schritte Nemesis so far…

We devised the piece in Braunschweig at the Staatstheater in 2023 and repeated it the following year in Bielefeld at Theaterlabor.

Based on the eponymous play written by Nicolai Evreinov in the mid 1950s, this production explores the themes of power, politics, love and betrayal in Stalinist Russia, focusing on the show trials of the 1930s. The production design shows the audience what’s happening off stage – the ‘onstage’ action is filmed live and shown on screen.

My role is that of Nemesis – the inescapable agent of retribution. At the end, as a god, I’m interviewed simultaneously in Russian and German about actions challenging the status quo, from Cain and Abel to the genocide in Rwanda. I’m only able to answer in bird language.
